1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions in your own words:

            Hobbies fill up the vacancies of life and make life emotionally balanced and psychologically satisfying. A hobby may be defined as a favourite subject or occupation that is not one’s main business. It is not one’s vocation but avocation; and a wholesome hobby makes a wholesome personality. People have some main business which they pursue for a living but in their spare time or leisure, they may pursue certain other things that their main business; and these activities go by the name of hobbies. There are countless hobbies such as reading general books, painting, philately, collecting old coins acting in dramas, music articles out of wood or coir and photography. All these are avocations or hobbies that can occupy our leisure and make it meaningful, entertaining and useful. A man who has cultivated the right hobbies does not feel that leisure is boring. As a result of the scientific and technological progress we have made, we have enough leisure at our disposal and if we do not spend our leisure in a wholesome manner, it can be harmful. It is well known that an idle man’s brain in the devil’s workshop. It is leisure that encourages man to indulge in diabolical activities. If man does not indulge in such activities even then his leisure can be harmful to him. It can cause boredom and the boredom thus caused can bring about many psychological abnormalities. This is one reason why people like sensational news or events. The psychology of loving war is rooted in the boredom caused by leisure.One writer remarks that if all people from the lowest to the highest had no leisure or knew how to spend their leisure, there would be no wars. Our primitive ancestors had no leisure since they had to spend all their time in gathering food; and so they had no time for mischievous activities. But, we have enough leisure; and we should spend our leisure usefully; hence, the need for the cultivation of the right hobbies.
