Note: Attempt five questions in all section. Attempt any one question from each Section.

Section-A

1. (a) Draw the simple modal of computer and explain its different parts.

(b) Write an algorithm to check whether a given number is even or odd.

2. (a) List out the similarities and differences between 7-bit and 8-bit ASCII.

(b) Convert the following:

  1. (A2B-D4)16 into decimal
  2. (FAB)16 into binary
  3. 110-0.11 by 2’s complement
  4. Divide (11001)2 by (101)2

Section-B

3. (a) Differentiate between main memory and auxiliary memory.

(b) Explain the functioning of floppy disk drives.

4. (a) What is memory Hierarchy? Name the general class of storage media that might make up a memory hierarchy.

(b) Distinguish between a sequential access, direct access and a random access device. Give example of each.

Section-C

5. (a) Explain the requirement of a program counter, a stack pointer and status flags in a microprocessor.

(b) What is RISC machine? Discuss the main function.                                    3

6. (a) Discuss the function of memory address register (MAR) and memory buffer register (MBR).

(b) Explain instruction format. What are the various types of instruction format? Discuss them suitable examples.

Section-D

7. (a) Discuss multi-programming, time-sharing and multitasking system.

(b) What are the advantages and disadvantages of batch processing?

8. Explain the following:

  1. Spooling
  2. Virtual memory
  3. I/O bound and CPU-bound jobs
  4. Response time

Section-E

9. (a) Explain the use of Computer Education and Training.

(b) Discuss the role of Computer in present day communications.

10. Discuss the use of computer in the following areas:

  1. Data Analysis
  2. Graphics
  3. DTP
